1+1 = 3 ??

First of all thanks to you all for your wonderful support. I know each one of you understands because you have all been through this before.

Paula, Dr V said that Clomid will probably work but it is an Androgen stimulator and because my Androgen levels will already be high due to the insulin resistance he doesn't want to make it any worse. He said that it might work but not in the way we hope for. He suggested that the injectibles will give much better results much faster. I tend to believe what he says because 3 doctors have said no to Clomid already.

I just spoke to Nurse A at Vitalab and she said he was probably speaking of Letrazol which is also a tablet and they cost R290 per cycle and then they would probably give injectables as well at R240 per half amp. (Is this right???) She said the average patient uses about 5 amps per cycle. Does this sound right to you? R240 for half an amp equals R480 per amp x 5 = R2400 per cycle.

So if I've got it right the costs would be:

R980 - First consultation
R1400 - HSG
R290 - Letrazol
R2400 - Injectables depending on which one he decides
R720 - Scans per cycle

R5790.00 - In total
R2370.47 - Bloods

Thus the total cost for this first cycle would be aproximetely R8160.47?

Thats not sooooo bad, but not the kind of money I have in my monthly budget at this point in time.

Eve, I believe you have done medicated cycles at VL before, can you perhaps assist me on working out the costs involved?

  2. I am just glad that either way you have an answer and a plan to work towards. In the end the buckets full of cash we spend to have our children makes it worth while!

We hope and pray that your dream will indeed soon become a reality.

    Lots of love

  3. Oh Mands, it is a hell of a lot of money, and I so wish I could help financially.

The bottom line is that you will have SOME answers, which is far more than you have now, and that is at least a positive in this shitty situation.

    Loads of hugs

  4. I'm glad you're getting a real proper FS to see you dispite the cost. VL sounds awesome and I honestly think that you need the very best care and attention about something this important. Go through your budget and be ruthless with cutting costs. The first cycle is pricy, yes but I think you'll get what you are paying for.

  6. Hi! Yes I know clomid is anti-estrogenic, I suppose I don't have the high androgen levels, I know I don't have full blown PCOS, only polycystic ovaries. I have to tell you though, even keeping that in mind I still cannot see waht harm 3 cycles of clomid? I mean if it doesn't work fine, but if it does? And 3 cycles are the most that is recommended anyway. Anyway, again just my opinion, but I think I will bow out on this for now, I have quite strong feelings re fertility treatment in general in SA, coming from a university were we are absolutely trained to be as conservative as possible. In the end it is up to you, and as I said before, I really do respect Dr V and I am sure he will do his best for you. xoxo

  7. Hey Mandy

My medicated cycles were all done at Medfem, but the pricing sounds right, however, my Dr there was more lenient with the scan fees! I didnt pay for every scan I went to. But, they are stricter at VL!
